Drilling high-precision holes in the µm range
Drilling high-precision holes is one of the core competences of Amphenol Precision Optics GmbH. Holes from 50µm diameter, with tolerances in the µm range, are the result of many years of expertise. The holes made by Amphenol Precision Optics are produced exclusively by mechanical means and not by eroding, lasering or other processes. This enables a cylindrical bore with lengths of up to 12x the bore diameter. Dimensions where a hole could be drilled through a human hair.
Industries such as medical technology and aerospace are the main beneficiaries of this extreme miniaturisation. Research institutions such as the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics in Potsdam (AIP) also rely on the special manufacturing expertise of Amphenol Precision Optics GmbH for precision parts. For a scientific application of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX), exactly 448 precision holes with a diameter of 330 µm each were drilled into a 9.5 x 9.5 mm metal plate (fibre array).
Bundled in a system of 35,000 glass fibres connected to 150 spectrographs, the expansion of the universe is now being researched at the 10-metre telescope at the McDonald Observatory in Texas.
